Spring Cleanup Checklist PictureThe weather is starting to get a little warmer and the trees are starting to bud. Soon, we’ll be spending time outdoors again. After a long winter, it’s finally time to get outside and spend a little time doing spring cleanup. What should be at the top of your list when it comes to getting your lawn and yard ready? The lawn professionals at Green Head Turf Systems have created a little list to get you started.

Don’t Be a Blade Buster

First, a word of caution. If you go out early in the morning and the air is crisp and the grass is still covered with frost, don’t do a lot of walking on your grass. Stepping on it will shatter the blade and show footprints later when the grass tries to green up. Wait until the frost has melted before stepping on it.

Clean Up Any Leftover Leaves That Are on Your Lawn

No matter how many leaves you raked or mulched last fall, winter winds, no doubt, deposited more on your lawn when you weren’t looking. Now is the time to clean these up because your grass will be coming back to life and the leftover leaves, especially if they are in clumps, can keep the grass underneath from the warm rays of the sun. and may stunt its growth. You don’t want brown spots where the leaves were piled. Also, clumps can keep moisture trapped on the surface causing mold or fungus problems below.

The First Mowing of the Year

Normally, the rule of thumb is to never cut off more than one third of the blade length when mowing your lawn. It’s okay to mow a little shorter than usual when it’s the first cutting of the year. Cutting your grass a little shorter gets rid of any dead top growth and allows your lawn to green up sooner.

Put Down a Pre-Emergent to Keep Weeds at Bay

Now is the time to get the weed control on your lawn. The warmer weather causes everything to start germinating and that includes pesky weeds. Knock out that first wave by applying a pre-emergent that will stop those seeds from germinating. Be aware, though, that if you’ve recently planted any new grass seed, don’t use the weed control. It will keep the new grass from germinating as well.

Research Lawn Care Companies

It may not have much to do with cleanup, but it may affect how your lawn looks all year long. If you’re tired of doing it yourself and you’re thinking of hiring a lawn care company this year, now is the best time to go online, talk to the neighbors and make some phone calls to find the company that’s right for you.
