Most people in the Olathe and Overland Park areas forget about their lawn for the winter. And why wouldn’t you? The grass goes dormant, the snow comes, and we get comfortable in our warm homes. But, you can do something about your lawn and take advantage of those snows. It’s called dormant seeding!

So, What Is Dormant Seeding?

Dormant seeding is pretty self-explanatory – seeding your lawn during the dormant season. This happens in this area from November to around March. The cool ground temperatures will keep grass seed dormant and allow it to be ready when the ground starts to warm up in the spring.

A really good time to apply grass seed during this time of year is right before you know a snow storm is coming. Your neighbors may look at you funny, but that grass seed gets covered by a layer of snow. And when that snow melts, it pulls that grass seed into the soil, where it will be ready for the warm weather.

The cold winter temperatures don’t harm the grass seed – it will remain fine until it’s ready to germinate in the spring. Go ahead and give dormant seeding a try, and you will help jump start the lawn care for your Olathe area lawn.
